Birmingham-based The Sanders Trust has broken ground on Baystate Behavioral Health Hospital in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

The $72 million project will be comprised of 123,230 square feet and will have 150 beds, with 120 of those being semi-private. Thirty private rooms will be designated for use by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.

The project is a joint venture between Kindred Behavioral Health, a wholly owned business of LifePoint Health, and Baystate Health. LifePoint Health will manage day-to-day operations, while Baystate Health psychiatrists and advanced practitioners will provide care under the medical leadership of Dr. Barry Sarvet.

“The Sanders Trust is proud to develop state-of-the-art healthcare facilities across the country, and we are honored to be selected as the developer for this hospital project in Massachusetts,” said Rance Sanders, president and CEO of The Sanders Trust.

The hospital is scheduled to open in summer 2023. DPR Construction is serving as general contractor, while Stengel Hill Architecture is the architectural firm. First Horizon Bank is providing project financing, with participation by Brookline Bank in Massachusetts.
