University of South Alabama increases student housing

South has purchased the Traditions apartment complex for $20.2 million

The University of South Alabama has purchased the Traditions apartment complex on Old Shell Road in Mobile for $20.2 million.

Located across the street from the University recreation center and baseball facility, the 156-unit complex was constructed in 2013 on six acres of land. Current residents have been notified of the sale by Ascent Residential. Ascent has been retained in a transition management role supporting the new ownership over the next several months.

“It’s an exciting time at the University of South Alabama as more students are choosing South for their education, and we want to accommodate as many of them as possible in University-owned housing,” said USA President Jo Bonner.

Undergraduate student enrollment has increased over the last two years. According to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, preliminary student enrollment at South for Fall 2024 was 14,335, an increase of more than 500 students from Fall 2023 enrollment, making South the fourth largest public university in Alabama ranked by student enrollment. Currently USA Housing manages 33 residence halls in seven residential communities.
