Report: Matrix surveilled Southern Co. CEO

Documents coming out of two lawsuits show that Matrix, a political consulting firm whose clients include Alabama Power, hired an investigator to look into Southern Co. CEO Tom Fanning and some of his associates. A spokesman for Southern Co., the parent company of Alabama Power, said the surveillance was not initiated by the company. The lawsuits are the result of a rift between Matrix founder Joe Perkins and former Matrix CEO Jeff Pitts. – AL.com

 

Borden Dairy closing Dothan plant

Borden Dairy will shut down operations no later than Sept. 30 at both its Dothan plant and at its Hattiesburg, Mississippi, location. The company will no longer produce milk in Alabama and Mississippi. – News 4

Striking Warrior Met miners say they won’t pay damages

The United Mine Workers of America calls a settlement of $13.3 million an “outrageous assessment of damages” and says the miners won’t pay the money tied to its strike against Warrior Met Coal. The strike is now in its 16th month.  AL.com

Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ has opened in Trussville, the pitmaster’s third Alabama location. Scott’s chain is based in Charleston, South Carolina, with three locations in the Birmingham area, one in Atlanta and one planned for Nashville. – CBS 42

 

Georgia’s Wild Leap Brew expands to Birmingham

Wild Leap Brew Co., a brewery and distillery in LaGrange, Georgia, is now distributing to Birmingham bars, retailers and restaurants. Wild Leap offers beer as well as ready-to-drink premium cocktails. – Bham Now
