The cities of Trussville, Mountain Brook and Homewood, all in Jefferson County, have infrastructure improvements to begin in 2027.
According to the Jefferson County Commission, in Trussville, Deerfoot Parkway will be upgraded and the Hollywood Boulevard bridge over Highway 280, which links Homewood, Mountain Brook and Birmingham, also will be improved with a new traffic signal and enhanced pedestrian access across the bridge corridor.
“These projects represent more than roadway improvements,” said Joe Knight, Jefferson County Commission president pro tem, and Mike Bolin, Jefferson County commissioner. “They are an example of strategic long-term planning and regional collaboration. These projects will deliver meaningful results for Jefferson County citizens for years to come and improve the connectivity of our communities.”
Local leaders also thanked the Highway 280 Public Road Cooperative District, the city of Birmingham and the Alabama Department of Transportation, as well as U.S. Sen. Katie Britt and U.S. Representative Robert Aderholt in securing funding for the projects.
According to Sen. Katie Britt’s website, Alabama Department of Transportation has received $16 million for the Deerfoot Parkway expansion through her office’s fiscal year 2025 Congressionally Directed Spending requests.
Deerfoot Parkway will be widened, allowing for additional travel lanes to be added to relieve congestion at Highway 11. The project will take approximately 12 months to plan and is expected to go out to bid in Spring 2027.
The commissioners, along with Trussville Mayor Ben Short, Homewood Mayor Jennifer Andress and Mountain Brook Mayor Graham Smith, added, “This appropriation allows us to address long-needed road widening and construction along Deerfoot Parkway to support the continued growth of the city of Trussville, while also standing as one of the strongest examples of regional cooperation our county has seen in decades.”
The Highway 280 bridge at Hollywood Boulevard will be expanded, with enhanced pedestrian safety and access. New sidewalks on Hollywood Boulevard from Malaga Avenue into Mountain Brook will be added, as well as a new traffic light at the exit ramp coming off Highway 280. A new turn lane going onto the existing on-ramp for Highway 280 East will be put in, addressing safety concerns. Construction of the sidewalks should begin this summer, with the bridge enhancements taking 12 months to plan and going out for bid in Spring 2027.
