Hyundai Reports Best Monthly Sales Record

Hyundai Motor America reports April sales of 77,523 units, a 128% increase compared to April 2020, making it the all-time monthly sales record.

“April 2021 was the second month in a row that we established a new best ever total and retail sales monthly record,” said Randy Parker, senior vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “As our all-new Tucson begins hitting dealerships in greater numbers, we expect the design and technology of our lineup to continue resonating with consumers.”

The Tucson is the latest vehicle to be added to the production lines at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery. It joins the Sonata, Elantra and Santa Fe currently being built in Montgomery, with plans to add the Santa Cruz soon.

April’s retail sales were 74,978, up 146% over the same month the previous year. Retail sales rose for all sectors with SUVs up 137%, cars up 163% and eco-friendly vehicles up 640%. Year to date, Hyundai sales are up 48% with 244,653 vehicles sold for 2021 in comparison to 164,843 vehicles sold in 2020.

When looking at the models made in Alabama, the Elantra sold 14,358 vehicles in April, a 91% increase over April 2020 sales of 7,536 vehicles. Year to date, the Elantra has sold 40,451 units, 22% more in 2021 versus a year ago. The Santa Fe sold 10,470 units in April compared to 5,602 in April 2020, an 87% increase. For the year, Santa Fe has sold 39,040 units compared to 25,504 units in 2020, a 53% increase. The Sonata sold 10,216 vehicles in April, compared to 3,428 units in April 2020, a 198% increase. For the year so far, Sonata has sold 30,773 units in comparison to 19,030 sold in 2020, a 62% increase. The Tucson doubled its sales in April versus a year ago, with 16,901 units sold in April compared to 8,438 units in April 2020. For the year, the Tucson sold 50,048 units compared to 32,173 units sold in 2020, a 56% increase.

In April, Hyundai revealed its 2020 Tucson marketing campaign and unveiled its highly anticipated Santa Cruz Sport Adventure Vehicle, which breaks ground in the SUV, truck and crossover segments by offering a vehicle “unlike anything else in the U.S. market,” according to the company. Hyundai also took home honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for the Santa Fe and Elantra, which were awarded Top Safety Pick awards. The Elantra also was noted with Kelley Blue Book’s Cost to Own awards for a second consecutive year.
