Hatch Fairhope new home underway

The former K-1 Center is undergoing a redesign to accommodate the business incubator

Local leaders and economic developers kicked off the renovation of the K-1 Center in Fairhope. When completed, the building will house business incubator Hatch Fairhope.

The Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance and the city of Fairhope have kicked off the revitalization of the historic K-1 Center in Fairhope. After the redevelopment, the K-1 Center will become the home of business incubator Hatch Fairhope.

The K-1 Center originally opened in 1925 as an elementary school. Hatch Fairhope provides co-working spaces, educational programs and resources to support technology-based startups and foster economic growth in Baldwin County.

“This project represents both a farewell and a bold new beginning,” said Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan. “The K-1 Center holds cherished memories for generations of Fairhope residents, and while we say goodbye to its familiar walls, we look forward to the opportunities this space will bring to our community’s future.”

BCEDA secured grants from Innovate Alabama to help build the infrastructure and support systems needed for the redevelopment. In addition to the grants, federal and state funding will also be used.  Construction will be led by Rogers & Willard under an approved $6.1 million contract, with completion expected in 2026. The building’s exterior will be preserved, while creating the new home for Hatch Fairhope.

“While we remember the special place this historic building has held in our community, we are thrilled to reimagine the K-1 Center and the new opportunities for growth that these renovated spaces will bring to our community, by creating a new home for entrepreneurial energy and community collaboration,” said Lee Lawson, president and CEO of the BCEDA.
