Ground has been broken on the Heman Drummond Center for Innovation in the Jasper Industrial Park in Walker County. The $80 million project will include a 120,000-square-foot building for career tech programs. Currently owned by the Walker Area Community Foundation, once the facility is built, it will be transferred to the Walker County School System for ownership and operation.

“The new Heman Drummond Center of Innovation will become the best example of career tech in Alabama,” said Gov. Kay Ivey. “Not only is it going to change thousands of lives, but it will also open its doors at exactly the right time. Alabama is seeing tremendous growth in good jobs, but we need more highly trained workers.”

The facility, once open in fall 2026, will feature training in cyber IT, robotics, health care, automotive and construction, offering hands-on training with advanced tools. Students will be able to earn industry certifications, take college-level technical courses and gain experience through mentorship, apprenticeships and internships.

Construction on the building is already underway.

“This new location will serve the students well with interdisciplinary projects, an entrepreneurship incubator and strong community partnerships will further prepare students for high-demand careers or higher education,” said Dennis Willingham, superintendent of Walker County School System.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, the center will offer an incubator that will provide resources, including workshops on business planning, marketing and finance.

Paul Kennedy, president of the Walker Area Community Foundation, added, “Local leaders, school officials and education partners agree that a new career and technical education school is an essential investment in the region’s future. Their support, strategic planning and financial investment demonstrate a clear and pressing necessity for a contemporary facility that aligns with the current demands of the workforce.”

To date, 85% of the total funding for the project has been raised. The project has been supported by the state, Walker Area Community Foundation and the generosity of the Drummond Family. The remaining 15% is being pursued through continued fundraising efforts, including donations, grants and private partnerships.
