Drummond Back to Work in Colombia

Drummond Co.’s coal mining operations in Colombia have chugged back to life after a seven-week strike. The South American nation’s government intervened to halt the strike, which had curtailed operations at Drummond’s two mines and at the port, Reuters reports.

Coal-mining union officials said workers were beginning to return to their jobs.

The strike cut production by about a third in Colombia,  the world’s fourth largest coal exporter. Despite the major drop in production, the strike had little effect on world coal prices, which already are low due to an oversupply in the marketplace.

Drummond, based in Birmingham, exported 26 million tons of coal from Colombia last year.
