Innovation is not new to Gulf Distributing Holdings. It has been part of the company’s DNA from the beginning. Fifty-three years ago, Freida G. Maisel left her job as a middle school English teacher to establish Gulf Distributing Company, becoming the first woman in the United States to independently purchase a beer distributorship. Since then, Gulf has continued to surpass industry standards and make investments to remain at the forefront of beverage distribution.
“I believe that we will always be in a state of change. We’re always looking for opportunities to gain efficiencies, provide new roles for our employees to step into and drive growth.”
In October 2025, Gulf made a significant step toward the future when it officially opened its new headquarters and operations center at 401 N. Water Street in downtown Mobile. The company invested more than $60 million to restore and transform the historic Press-Register building into one of the Southeast’s most advanced beverage distribution facilities.
The rehabilitated 243,000-square-foot facility will now serve as Gulf’s central hub, housing corporate offices, employee training spaces and advanced distribution operations.
Alongside the building renovation, Gulf introduced several new technologies to improve the accuracy, efficiency and visibility of its operations. These include the Cirrus Tech Automated Storage and Racking System (ASRS); Rehrig Pacific Vision Object Recognition (VOR) load-validation portals and DUO Delivery systems; and the Ohanafy business platform.
Modernizing Distribution Operations
The ASRS uses an automated crane to manage product storage and retrieval within a large enclosed racking system. Gulf’s team loads inventory into the system using a forklift and scans a barcode, allowing the automated crane to handle the rest. The system helps Gulf make better use of its warehouse space while reducing the physical demands placed on employees.
Gulf’s partnership with Rehrig Pacific supports greater accuracy throughout the distributing process. VOR cameras and load-validation technology help verify that orders are picked and loaded correctly, while the DUO Delivery system allows Gulf to track orders through to delivery and efficiently recover pallets.
Gulf also partnered with Ohanafy, an AI-powered, Salesforce-native business platform built specifically for the beverage industry. Ohanafy consolidates key business functions into one connected system, helping Gulf automate warehouse and truck-building workflows, optimize routing, enable intelligent suggested ordering, and gain real-time visibility across the organization.
Investing in Technology and People
In addition to investing in new technology, Gulf has expanded its leadership team to support the company’s plans for continued growth. Cam Koorangi joined Gulf as Director of Enterprise Solutions and is leading the company’s efforts to remain at the forefront of beverage distribution technology. With Koorangi’s leadership, Gulf plans to continue making strategic investments in its operation and its people while identifying new opportunities to improve the way the company serves its customers.
“We’re doing more than modernizing a warehouse. We’re modernizing how an entire industry thinks about distribution.”
Each technology was selected not only to improve Gulf’s distribution operations but also to enhance employee safety and quality of life. The new systems increase productivity, reduce physically demanding work and create opportunities for employees to move into more skilled and technology-focused roles.
Together, these investments continue Gulf’s longstanding legacy of innovation while ushering in a new era of modernized physical and digital infrastructure.
Following in the footsteps of its founder, Gulf continues to set a standard for innovation through its constant evolution. Through its investment in a new headquarters, advanced technology, and expanded leadership, Gulf is strengthening its position as a forward-thinking leader helping shape the future of beverage distribution.
“For us, implementing this new technology ensures that our customers can rely on Gulf to deliver what they need on time and without error.” Louis Maisel said. “We’ve accomplished our goal of opening up many opportunities for our employees, and there is plenty more to come as we embark in this new era.”
