Women Leading the Way in Alabama’s Beer Distribution Industry

The beer distribution industry is vital to the U.S. economy, employing 142,000 workers and contributing $87 billion to the national economy. In Alabama, beer distributors are responsible for 2,228 jobs and a $688 million economic impact. Amidst these numbers, women are making significant strides in this traditionally male-dominated field.

For years, major beer brands focused primarily on men as their target audience. However, with women now outnumbering men as alcohol consumers, the industry is evolving. This shift is evident not only in marketing strategies but also in the increasing presence of women in key roles, including distribution operations.

Operations in beer distribution involve managing the logistics, inventory, and delivery processes that ensure products reach retailers efficiently and in perfect condition. It is critical because seamless operations maintain the supply chain’s reliability, minimize costs, and ensure that consumers have consistent access to fresh beer, driving both customer satisfaction and business success.

For three women at Gulf Distributing, who are managing operations, they are leading the charge, proving that success in beer distribution isn’t bound by gender. Their stories highlight resilience, innovation, and the unique perspectives that women bring to the industry.

For Chandler Marston, the beer distribution industry is a family legacy. “I had the opportunity to grow up in the beverage industry; it’s ingrained in me, and it’s a lifestyle,” says Marston, who has been with Gulf Distributing full-time since 2018. Her deep connection to the field is mirrored in her dedication to the company’s success.

Doris Shaper, who joined Gulf Distributing 12 years ago, entered the industry by chance. “It was pure luck and determination. I had never been in the business before, but the multitasking aspect of this job attracted me,” she explains. Her adaptability and willingness to learn have been key to her success.

Keri Mitchell, a newcomer to Gulf Distributing with a background in cosmetics, has embraced the challenge of switching industries. “I’ve been with the company for two months now, previously working with L’Oréal. I’ve never felt intimidated and I am eager to learn and master this field,” Keri shares. Her fresh perspective has already made a significant impact, with Marston noting that “Keri has made massive changes in a short amount of time.”

Working in beer distribution offers unique rewards, especially for women breaking new ground. Keri takes pride in challenging stereotypes, stating, “Being a woman in a male-dominated industry is rewarding. People are often shocked, but girl power is a strong thing.” She believes women bring much-needed structure and fresh perspectives to operations.
Marston agrees, emphasizing, “Women tend to be more detail-oriented, which is essential in this fast-paced industry. Problem-solving is a strength, and this industry is perfectly suited for the way women think.”

Collaboration is central to their success. Keri credits her colleagues for their support: “These ladies have lifted me up and supported me throughout the process of being at Gulf.” Marston highlights the company’s collaborative nature: “We work together daily, bringing ideas to the table rather than demands. Gulf understands that progress is a shared goal.” Dorris adds, “The support is just a phone call away, and having support from these three ladies is amazing.”

A recent example of their teamwork was the reorganization of the warehouse, a project that required overtime and innovative thinking. “Keri had great ideas that took pressure off the teams and allowed us to work more effectively together,” Marston recalls.
For women considering a career in beer distribution, Marston has a simple message: “Welcome home. It can be an intimidating industry to enter, but prove yourself through your work, and you’ll find your place.”

Keri encourages women to approach the industry with confidence. “Go in knowing that you can do it too,” she advises.

These women are not just making a name for themselves in Alabama’s beer distribution industry—they’re paving the way for future generations.
