Weyerhaeuser Restarts South Alabama Mill

Four years after closing its engineered lumber plant at Evergreen, Weyerhaeuser has announced plans to restart production of Trus Joist TJI joists and Microllam LVL lines — engineered wood products used in residential home construction.

The decision to reopen the mill was based on a variety of statistical data, including the uptick in housing starts, a company spokesman said.

The plant manager, Bob Doll, began work on site Aug. 30. The company is beginning the hiring process for additional management positions and expects to have 100 employees at work by the end of 2014, including a mix of former employees and newcomers.

The plant can produce 2 million cubic feet of Microllam LVL annually and 120 million lineal feet of TJI Joists.

Weyerhaeuser also operates a lumber manufacturing facility in Millport, a nursery tree improvement center in Camden and manages more than 547, 000 acres of timber in 23 counties in Alabama.
