Globe Metallurgical Inc. is considering restarting its silicon metal facility in Selma and is seeking New Market Tax Credits for the project. The two-furnace operation in Selma has a total annual capacity of 22,000 tons of silicon metal. GMI hopes to restart one furnace in December 2021 and the second by March 2022. – Made in Alabama

 

Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering receives $1 million donation

The financial services company Deloitte donated $1 million to the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering to expand and give more students at the Huntsville school hands-on experience before entering the workforce.  – WAAY 31

New rail ferry makes maiden voyage

CG Railway LLC’s new rail ferry, The Cherokee, made its maiden voyage out of the Port of Mobile. The 590-foot-long vessel can carry up to 135 railcars. On its maiden trip, the ferry hauled 122 railcars to Veracruz Mexico and came back with 130 railcars. – World-Grain.com

 

2nd man allegedly killed by chemical exposure at Daikin plant

A second man died this week, allegedly from chemical exposure at Daikin America’s Decatur plant in July. He spent nearly three months in UAB’s ICU before dying. Another Daikin employee died in August. – AL.com
