Scrushy Wants Back in Health Care Business

Former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy — recently released from jail on bribery and fraud charges that also sent former Gov. Don Siegelman to jail — said in mid-May that he wants to start a new healthcare company.

His agreement with the Securities and Exchange Commission forbids him from being an officer or director of some types of public companies.

His attorney told the Birmingham News that Scrushy was exercising his right to have the prohibition lifted.

Both the Birmingham News and Birmingham Business Journal report that Scrushy sees opportunities for new healthcare programs under the federal Affordable Care Act.

Quoting from Scrushy’s affidavit, the News wrote: “With the passage and implementation of Obamacare, I believe that there are many new business opportunities to build and provide high quality, cost effective health care delivery systems and facilities.”

Though Scrushy has been in and out of trouble with federal authorities and with HealthSouth stockholders, the company he founded continues to prosper, with hospitals in 28 states and Puerto Rico.
