Alabama’s 48, 500 farms, with 9 million acres in production, put Alabama in the top ranks for a number of crops in 2011, according to Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan, reporting in the Alabama Farmers and Consumers Bulletin.
Alabama ranked second for catfish sales, third for peanuts, third for broiler chickens, fifth for pecans, 10th for cotton, 14th for eggs, 17th for peaches and 25th for cattle inventory.
Farm receipts totaled more than $5 billion, with cash receipts for crops, livestock and poultry at $4.55 billion, an increase of 7.3 percent from the previous year.
