Northeast Alabama Community College broke ground yesterday on its new women’s softball facility, near the walking and nature trail.

The $7 million to $8 million project will include grandstand seating for 350, a press box, concessions, artificial playing turf, LED lighting for afternoon and evening games, a video scoreboard and more.

The facility is designed by architecture firm McKee & Associates, with Sports Turf Co. acting as contractor. McKee & Associates is drawing off its experience designing stadiums for other schools, including Auburn University, Troy University and Jacksonville State University.

“We are very happy to bring women’s softball to the college level,” said NACC President David Campbell. “There is much excitement in our area in anticipation of our starting a women’s softball program at Northeast.”

Campbell added a thank you to state legislators Rep. Nathaniel Ledbetter, Rep. Mike Kirkland and Sen. Steve Livingston, as well as the Alabama Community College System Chancellor Jimmy Baker for their support of the project.
