Monster on the Prowl

Drummond Co.’s multi-million-ton dragline crane, idled since 1995, is moving again, the Birmingham News reports.  In a story by Kyle Whitmire, the newspaper says the mechanical beast, nicknamed Mr. Tom, is moving from Tuscaloosa County to Jefferson County, leaving a swath of packed red clay behind.

The enormous machine is en route to work at the Shannon mines near Bessemer, the paper reports. But fluctuations in coal prices mean it may once again sit idle when it arrives, the News says.

The crane has a 78-cubic-yard scoop that can lift tons of coal at a time.

Drummond Co. did not answer the paper’s questions about their plans for the massive mining machine.
