Indycar race adds Children’s to name

Alabama’s major Indycar event will be named the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix for five years. Medical Properties Trust is the event’s sponsor and named Children’s the title sponsor. The race takes place in April at the Barber Motorsports Park.   – Bham Now

Historic Tuscumbia restaurant will reopen

The Palace in Tuscumbia restaurant announced it would close its doors this week, but the new owners say it will reopen after closing temporarily Jan. 20-30. The owners of the property will also be turning what used to be a nearby bookstore into a café that will feature live music. – News 19

Spring Hill’s first Black student dies

Dr. Julia Joyner, the first Black student admitted to Spring Hill College in Mobile, died this month at age 88. Joyner, a Mobile native, was in health care in Washington, D.C., before moving to suburban Virginia and opening a private practice in psychiatry. She retired in 2014.  – Fox 10 

Barkin new Mobile Chamber chair

Brent Barkin, former president and CEO of Shoe Station, is the 2023 chairman of the Mobile Chamber board of directors. Barkin’s father started Shoe Station in Mobile in 1984, and Brent Barkin led the brand for seven years before it was acquired by Shoe Carnival. – Mobile Chamber
