Historical Alabama: Bankhead Lock and Dam

A photo walk down memory lane.

In this photo from 1914, a pulley lifts a large rock during the construction of the Bankhead Lock and Dam on the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa County. Named for Alabama Sen. John H. Bankhead, the original Bankhead Dam was finished in 1915 as the last of 17 locks between Mobile and Birmingham. The current lock was completed in 1975, although some of the original dam structure still exists.
