The original Tutwiler Hotel was constructed in 1913 and razed in 1974

Workers on the site of the Tutwiler Hotel, under construction at 20th Street and Fifth Avenue North in Birmingham in 1913. O.V. Hunt took this photo, in which you can see Birmingham City Hall and the Hillman Hotel. The original Tutwiler, a 13-story, 425-room building, closed in 1972 and was razed in 1974. Another Tutwiler Hotel, named for the original, opened in 1986. Photo courtesy of Birmingham, Alabama, Public Library Archives.
