Historic Alabama: Chemistry for the front lines

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant in Gadsden

During World War II, women filled the chemistry lab at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant in Gadsden. The plant closed in 2020, 91 years after it opened in 1929. The plant was busy during the war, producing a number of war-related products, including gas masks, tires for the Army, rubber-dipped fabrics and reclaimed and synthetic fiber.
