Historic Alabama: Building Faith

Under construction in 1960 is the chapel at Tuskegee University

In 1957, the chapel at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) was struck by lightning and destroyed by fire. In this 1960 photo by architect Paul Rudolph, the new (and still existing) chapel is under construction. Rudolph, a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic (now Auburn University) and later dean of the Yale School of Architecture, worked with Tuskegee professors John A. Welch and Louis Fry on the chapel’s design. Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress.
