The City of Decatur has produced a new video celebration the achievements of notable African-American citizens who have made contributions to the community in the fields of religion, education, employment, military, athletics, and political and social change. Lift Every Voice and Sing covers 180 years of history, highlighting the first house of worship, the first newspaper, transitions from agriculture to skilled labor and struggles for basic rights.Â
Decatur also is taking the lead in a new tourist attraction, inviting visitors to explore Civil War history using a high-tech tool called geocaching. Participants use their GPS systems in a 21st century treasure hunt that leads them to fascinating Civil War sites. Check them both out at decaturcvb.org.
