Biggest Ship (so far) Comes In

Early in June, the Port of Mobile welcomed its first Post-Panamax container ship—that’s a ship too big to have squeezed through the Panama Canal before the canal’s expansion.

The container ship MSC Laura marks Mediterranean Shipping’s first weekly call at the Alabama State Docks, connecting Mobile with the European ports of Antwerp, Felixstowe, Bremerhaven and LeHavre.

The ship’s call demonstrates the effectiveness of $340 million worth of investments in a new container terminal, improved turning basin and channel deepened to 45 feet, said Jimmy Lyons, director of the Alabama State Port Authority.
