Avelo Airlines takes inaugural flight from Mobile

Orlando-bound plane flies from Brookley, which is set to be the city’s new commercial airport by 2025

The first Avelo flight gets a salute as it prepares for takeoff.

The inaugural Avelo Airlines flight from Mobile to Orlando — a new carrier and a new destination for the Port City — took off Wednesday morning from Mobile International Airport (BFM).

The new airport is under construction and expected to be ready to handle all of Mobile’s commercial passenger traffic by 2025.

Avelo, which is headquartered in Texas, announced plans for the new service in early March.

Avelo’s first Mobile-to-Orlando flight wings over Mobile Bay.

After this inaugural flight, the airline plans twice weekly service to Orlando International Airport, with flights on Thursdays and Sundays. Avelo flies Next Generation Boeing 737 aircraft.

“Mobile – it’s officially time to say hello to Avelo,” said Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy. “We’re excited to introduce the Northern Gulf to Avelo’s low fares, industry-leading reliability and caring service. We’ll be taking flight from Mobile’s most convenient airport – which will make getting to Orlando easier and faster than ever.”

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson added, “We are beyond thrilled to see commercial flights coming to the Mobile International Airport, and we know Avelo will provide an affordable option for residents throughout the region traveling to and from Orlando.”

Mobile Airport Authority President Chris Curry called the event “momentous,” adding. “We are confident that this is just the beginning of a remarkable journey, with Mobile International Airport serving as a gateway to endless opportunities for our passengers.”

The airline, which first flew in 2021, serves 44 airports in the U.S.
