Alabama State University’s board of trustees has approved plans for two new student housing complexes to be built on campus.

The approved housing consists of new residential apartment buildings on Forest Avenue and South University Drive. The Forest Avenue building will house approximately 288 beds, while the South University Drive building will contain 264 beds. In addition to the housing on Forest Avenue, the plan calls for a student activity center with a café to be built.

To accommodate the new building on South University Drive, construction crews will demolish Cynthia Alexander Apartments.

“This announcement has been a long time coming. We have not had new construction on the ASU campus for a number of years, and to have two new apartment complexes coming to the campus within the next couple of years is certainly exciting news,” said Dr. Quinton Ross Jr., president of ASU.

Donald Dotson, who serves as the university’s vice president of facilities management and operations, will oversee the construction.

“The need for new student housing is critical to the university’s continued growth,” said Dotson. “We want to ensure that we give our students the optimum opportunities, which modern living facilities provide them.”

The complexes will offer apartment-style living and are in line with ASU’s FOCUS 2030 Strategic Plan to upgrade campus facilities for revitalization and expansion. Both complexes are expected to be built simultaneously so they are ready for occupancy as quickly as possible.
