Verizon has upgraded its network in the Birmingham area.

Part of a multi-year redesign of its architecture, Verizon’s latest upgrades expand the number of Birmingham residents that have access to its 5G Ultra Wideband service. Expanded coverage includes new cell sites in Grayson Valley/Northeast Birmingham, Mulga in West Birmingham, Lakeshore, Hoover and north of downtown.

In the coming months, more enhancements will increase capacity in Dolomite, South Adamsville and Overton East Birmingham.

“Verizon is committed to delivering the most reliable network experience and meeting our customer’s connectivity needs, no matter where they are,” said Eric Lia, vice president of engineering and operations for Verizon.

Engineers have also improved in-building coverage for areas like Protective Stadium, the Westin, the Sheraton, Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex’s Concert Hall and Legacy Arena, Crossplex and the Birmingham Airport. These in-building solutions use a combination of Verizon’s C-band spectrum and its Millimeter Wave spectrum.

Verizon has also upgraded its fiber connections in many of the cell sites to improve the amount of data that can be carried on the system.
