The University of Alabama at Birmingham received more than $715 million in research grants and extramural awards for the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, up $67.8 million from the previous year. U.S. Steel on fast financial pace

U.S. Steel says it’s on pace for its second-best financial year ever, with seamless pipe being manufactured through a new electric arc furnace at near maximum capacity. The furnace was a $412 million investment for the Birmingham company.  – AL.com

Mazda struggling with staffing in Alabama

Mazda says it is having trouble attracting and keeping workers at its Alabama plant, so the plant has been operating with just one shift since January. The company’s plan to add a second shift by the end of the year has been pushed back. Mazda builds its CX-50 at its plant in Huntsville.  – Automotive News
