Three Alabama-made cars earn Top Safety Pick awards

Honda, Hyundai and Mazda all make the grade

Honda’s 2023 Odyssey won the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for the minivan category.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named its Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ vehicles for 2023. The 48 models went through higher standards than in past models.

Of the models chosen, Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Sonata and the new Mazda CX-50, all made in Alabama, were awarded for safety.

Hyundai’s Sonata earns IIHS Top Safety Pick for midsize cars.

Honda’s Odyssey, made in Lincoln at Honda Alabama Auto Plant, won in the minivan category for the Safety Pick+. Hyundai Sonata, made at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery, won in the midsize car category for Top Safety Pick. The Mazda CX-50, made at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Huntsville, took home the Top Safety Pick award for the small SUV category.

The IIHS safety awards had a smaller number of vehicles honored this year in comparison to past years because it strengthened its requirements. The models that earned 2023 awards had to pass more rigorous requirements in side crash protection, pedestrian crash prevention systems and better headlights.
