W. Stancil Starnes, who has led ProAssurance and its board for some 15 years, has announced plans to retire as of the next shareholder meeting in late May.
Starnes joined the company as CEO and board member in 2007, becoming executive chairman of the board in 2008, “overseeing a remarkable period in which ProAssurance completed seven acquisitions, significantly diversified its product offerings, and vastly expanded its geographical reach,” the company said in announcing his retirement.
Before joining the company, he was senior partner at the Starnes & Atchison LLP law firm — now Starnes Davis Florie LLP — that he founded with this father in 1975. The firm specialties include advocacy for the health care community.
Active in the community, Starnes is president pro tempore of the University of Alabama system board and he is chairman of the Catholic health system Ascension. He was elected to the Alabama Business Hall of Fame in 2021 and to Alabama’s Academy of Honor in 2018.
“On behalf of our entire organization and the stakeholders we serve, I want to thank Stan for his visionary leadership and deep commitment to our insureds, our investors, our employees and the larger medical community,” said Ned Rand, president and CEO of ProAssurance.
Birmingham-based ProAssurance offers health care professional liability insurance and coverage for medical products liability, legal professional liability and workers’ compensation.
