In northeast Alabama, Jacksonville State University continues to strengthen its role as a workforce and economic driver with the launch of two forward-looking academic programs: a Bachelor of Science in Aviation and a Master of Science in Forensic Investigation. Both programs are designed to meet growing industry demand while creating new pathways for students and professionals across the region.
Jax State’s aviation program prepares students for leadership and operational roles in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the Southeast. Built on a foundation of aviation science, safety and industry best practices, the program offers concentrations in aviation management, commercial aviation and public safety aviation.
“This program represents an exciting step forward for Jacksonville State University and for workforce development across our region,” says the school’s president, Don C. Killingsworth Jr. “The aviation industry continues to grow rapidly across Alabama and the Southeast, creating new opportunities for students and new workforce needs for our state.”
Strategically located within reach of major airport hubs in Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville and Chattanooga, Jax State is positioned to help meet regional demand for skilled aviation professionals. The commercial aviation concentration includes structured flight training aligned with FAA standards, preparing students for licensure and certification, while public safety aviation focuses on drone operations and emergency response applications.
“The Bachelor of Science in Aviation reflects Jax State’s commitment to developing academic programs that respond to emerging workforce needs,” says Dr. Christie Shelton, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “This program blends technical knowledge with applied learning experiences that prepare graduates to make immediate contributions.”
Further strengthening its academic portfolio, Jax State has introduced its Master of Science in Forensic Investigation (MSFI), an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to prepare students for advanced roles in investigative and forensic fields.
The MSFI program emphasizes hands-on training and real-world case applications, covering areas such as crime scene investigation, medicolegal death investigation, criminal behavior analysis and cold case work. Students engage in realistic investigative scenarios while developing critical thinking, analytical and leadership skills.
Taught by faculty with professional field experience, the program is designed for both working professionals and recent graduates seeking career advancement. Its focus on leadership, organizational development and interdisciplinary collaboration positions graduates for supervisory and complex investigative roles across public and private sectors.
Together, these programs reflect Jax State’s broader mission to align academic offerings with workforce needs and regional economic priorities. By investing in high-demand fields like aviation and forensic investigation, the university is not only preparing students for meaningful careers but also supporting industries that are vital to Alabama’s continued growth.
Talladega College
Talladega College offers a wide range of undergraduate studies including bachelor’s degrees in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, psychology, education and more.
Graduate programs include master’s programs in computer information systems and business administration.
Talladega College has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense through academic year 2027.
In April 2026, Gadsden State Community College and Talladega College announced a partnership to make it easier for students to continue their education beyond an associate degree.
The agreement, signed on Gadsden State’s campus by Gadsden State President Alan Smith and Talladega College President Dr. Willie L. Todd Jr., strengthens transfer pathways for Gadsden State graduates and streamlines their move into bachelor’s programs at Talladega.
“We are proud to partner with Talladega College to create new opportunities for our students to continue their education,” Smith says. “This agreement reflects a shared commitment to student success and opens the door for our graduates to take the next step with confidence.”
The partnership includes coordinated outreach to eligible graduates, hands-on guidance through the transfer process and information on financial aid. “At Talladega College, we are committed to forging onward by creating meaningful pathways that empower students to become their highest and truest self,” Todd says. “This partnership with Gadsden State strengthens our ability to support transfer students as they continue their academic journey and prepare for successful careers.”
Central Alabama Community College (CACC)
With campuses in four cities — Alexander City, Prattville, Childersburg and Talladega — Central Alabama Community College’s current enrollment is 2,335 with a student-to-instructor ratio of 17:1.
CACC awarded $216,425 in athletic scholarships and 81% of students receive some type of financial aid.
The college offers an associate degree in nursing, LPN to RN mobility, and a practical nursing certificate. Workforce development offerings include MSSC certification, medication administration certification, truck driving, welding and more.
Gadsden State Community College’s Ayers campus
Gadsden State Community College’s Ayers campus in Calhoun County is a community resource for high school students, graduates and adult learners.
Courses of study include academic, technical, health sciences, skills training, adult education, dual enrollment and continuing education.
