Spotlight on Butler, Lowndes, Covington & Crenshaw: Health Care

These four counties are served by four hospitals, some with ties to larger health systems.

Andalusia Health.

Andalusia Health

Andalusia Health is an 88-bed acute care facility that has served South Alabama since 1966. Named to the Thomson-Reuters Top 100 Hospital list in 2005, 2007 and 2011, Andalusia Health is affiliated with LifePoint Health.

The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and surgical services. Comprehensive cancer care, provided by 21st Century Oncology and Sacred Heart Oncology, is available on Andalusia Health’s campus.

Recent improvements include the addition of an 8,000-square-foot emergency department, renovation of the surgical suites, a fixed-base MRI expansion and the addition of a GE 1.5 Tesla MRI with vascular console. The hospital also features an eight-bed ICU. The Birthing Center has five labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites and a C-section suite.

Last year the hospital added a new walk-in clinic and a urology clinic.

Andalusia Health employs more than 300 employees, including service contractors. Brian Springate was named CEO in 2021. He worked earlier at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, another LifePoint Health facility in Kentucky.

Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama

Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama in Greenville has more than 200 employees and offers complete inpatient, outpatient, medical and surgical care, plus affiliated clinics and specialty services. The hospital is in a partnership with UAB Medicine for services that include general surgery and telemedicine. The hospital also offers psychiatric geriatric services.

Along with physicians at the main campus, the hospital operates a pediatric and family practice clinic in Greenville and a clinic in Georgiana that recently received new equipment.

RMCCA offers diagnostic imaging in several areas, from ultrasound to MRI and mammography. It also has a sleep center.

Mizell Memorial Hospital.

Mizell Memorial Hospital

Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp, with 240 employees, owns two outpatient primary clinics and one specialty clinic, plus the Mizell Wellness Center.

The hospital offers 24-hour emergency services plus an array of inpatient and outpatient diagnostics and care.

In January 2022, Mizell opened its new Outpatient Infusion Center, providing infusion therapy services for IV antibiotics and chronic diseases.

The hospital has a new CEO, Kerry Goff, from Jackson, Mississippi.

In September 2021, Mizell Memorial Hospital was awarded the Overall Growth Award by Alliant Services. This award recognizes combined year-over-year growth in the areas of admissions, surgery, ER visits, clinic visits and imaging procedures.

The hospital also has renovated roofing, insulation and HVAC systems.

Crenshaw Community Hospital.

Crenshaw Community Hospital

Crenshaw Community Hospital in Luverne has 65 licensed beds, and provides more than 150 jobs and $23 million in local economic impact. Beyond the hospital, it operates Crenshaw Family Care Clinic and Hospital Home Health, both in Luverne.

The hospital offers a range of diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and surgical services.

Crenshaw Community Hospital recently completed some $1.6 million in renovations to its adult behavioral health unit to upgrade safety features and provide a better patient recovery experience.

The hospital also has added cardiology, gastroenterology and orthopedics to its existing services.
