Proactive Maintenance: Preventing Unscheduled Downtime

Mercedes-Benz describes its vehicle quality as a core part of its brand identity, emphasizing craftsmanship, attention to detail, timeless design, safety, and an overall sense of excellence. Mercedes-Benz’s supplier relationships play a direct and significant role in maintaining and elevating the company’s vehicle quality. Their approach combines strict standards, close collaboration, data-driven supplier evaluation, sustainability commitments, and transparent negotiation frameworks.

In 2015, CenterLine was selected to manufacture robotic spot‑weld guns for Mercedes‑Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) for two new vehicle platforms. CenterLine supplied 450 weld guns, all of which operated for a minimum of seven years, and approximately 300 of those units were later redeployed, achieving a total service life of about fourteen years. This project marked the beginning of CenterLine’s long‑standing relationship with MBUSI. The contract also included weld gun maintenance services and technical training to support their skilled trades workforce. Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) remains a core joining technology in automotive body‑in‑white (BIW) assembly, providing consistency, structural integrity, durability, and crash performance required in modern vehicle manufacturing.

To deliver the training, CenterLine partnered with Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT), a division of the Alabama Department of Commerce that provides technical training at no cost to employers. AIDT plays a key role in workforce development at MBUSI in Vance, Alabama. It operates full-time within the company’s Bill Taylor Institute, the official Markus Schäfer Center, where it provides ongoing technical and workforce training for MBUSI team members.

The AIDT operates the Alabama Robotics Technology Park (RTP) and supports local community colleges and high schools. They have launched a state-wide K12 workforce development initiative to prepare students for careers in robotics and automation. CenterLine is dedicated to developing a strong, skilled workforce to drive innovation and ensure long-term operational success.

CenterLine spot weld guns have been in service at MBUSI for over 11 years and at MBV for 6 years, with an estimated 12 to 20 million cycles depending on the gun and its function. The technicians are trained in how the spot weld process works, how to operate the guns, how to perform preventive maintenance, and how to rebuild and test them.

Over the years, an estimated 125 technicians have received a Spot Weld Gun Preventive Maintenance training certificate. CenterLine’s on‑site team performed weekly weld gun maintenance and scheduled weld gun repair.

CenterLine has been a contributing member of the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA) since 1977. They design, develop, manufacture, and commission solutions to complex material-joining problems for OEMs, tier suppliers, and integrators across the global automotive, aerospace, and mass transit industries. As a vertically integrated solution provider, CenterLine has a proven record of taking the risk out of the most challenging projects.

MBUSI chose CenterLine for their expertise in resistance welding processes, experienced designers, and skilled spot weld gun builders. They design and build specialized custom spot weld guns for challenging workpieces and tooling geometries, including rockets, rail cars, large trucks, and battery modules.
