Phenix City plant to shut down

Continental Carbon Company, a Phenix City carbon black manufacturing plant, will close at the end of the month. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management said the plant had to close because it hasn’t made mandated upgrades.The facility employs about 120 people.  – News 3

 

Montevallo coffee house closing

Strand Coffeehouse, which opened in February in Montevallo, will close on Dec. 31. Sean Eichelberger says he’s closing the spot for “personal reasons.” – Bham Now

Carver HS students win $10K for app

A group of students at Birmingham’s George Washington Carver High School has been awarded $10,000 for an app they’ve been working on. NeXsim, which pairs students through common interests, won the competition sponsored by Altec Industries. – The Birmingham Times

 

Online tool helps with Southeast job search

Southeast AlabamaWorks has unveiled what it says is a first-of-its-kind regional job-search tool. The tool focuses on the 10-county region of the Southeast AlabamaWorks territory, including Barbour, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike counties The tool can be accessed via southeastalabamaworks.com.  – Dothan Eagle
