Oakworth tops “best bank to work for” list for fifth straight year

American Banker Magazine sponsors the competition

Oakworth Capital Bank team prepares for the Birmingham Corporate Challenge.

For the fifth year in a row, Oakworth Capital Bank has been named Best Bank to Work For, based on a survey by American Banker Magazine.

Oakworth has topped the list for five of the ten years the list has been developed.

“The banks on this list have distinguished themselves by their employee-friendly policies,” said Chana R. Schoenberger, editor-in-chief of American Banker. “In today’s human-resource environment, it’s important for banks to focus on how they’ll hire and keep the people they need.”

The magazine said this of Oakworth: “Scott Reed, senior managing director and CEO, says that ‘genuine trust’ in his employees and the ability to lead by example are his guiding principles. He attributes this success to the fact that ‘when people know that encouragement and coaching comes from somebody who truly cares about their wellbeing and success, a leader can be positively impactful.’”

Honors were based on factors including:

  • 91% of employees participated in the survey, compared to a national average of 66%.
  • Oakworth was scored above the benchmark on 75 of 77 questions.
  • Associates praised the bank for its leadership, care for associates, its people and team spirit and associate development, among others.

“We are really excited to earn this recognition for the fifth year in a row,” said Reed. “The greatest benefit of this process is hearing from our associates about what we do well and how we can be better. We have a group of associates who believe in and live by our core values. Having people with aligned values and who are working toward a common objective positions Oakworth to serve our clients like none other.”

Based in Birmingham, Oakworth also has offices in Mobile and Nashville and plans to open an office in the Carolinas next year. The bank provides commercial and private banking, wealth management and advisory services.
