Mercedes-Benz revealed the new look and specifications of the EQS SUV, the third model in its electric vehicle architecture series. The EQS SUV will be made exclusively at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International in Tuscaloosa.
“The global Mercedes-Benz production network is digital, sustainable, efficient and flexible. The Tuscaloosa plant, with its highly skilled and motivated U.S. workforce, will be a critical factor in the continued success of Mercedes-Benz; and we are proud that our new electric SUVs will also be built in Alabama for global markets,” said Jörg Burzer, member of the board of management of Mercedes-Benz AG, Production and Supply Chain Management.
The EQS SUV will accommodate up to seven passengers and will have multiple drive modes to tackle roadways from light terrain to off road. The vehicle shares the long wheelbase of Mercedes’ EQS Saloon, but is more than 20 centimeters higher.
“With the EQS SUV, we are continuing to consistently implement the strategy of making our vehicles more sustainable and digital — with the goal of building the most desirable electric cars in the world,” said Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
The exterior of the EQS SUV combines aerodynamics with innovative aesthetics to give the vehicle a seamless, dynamic look. This is enhanced by its headlamps and Black Panel radiator grille system, which includes a number of sensors that send information to the driving assistance systems.
It has an electric drive train on the rear axle and the 4MATIC versions will also have an electric drive train on the front axle, distributing the drive torque efficiently for a faster response.
The chassis also sports a four-link axle at the front and an independent multi-link suspension at the rear, providing for vehicle lift for clearance depending on the drive mode selected.
The vehicle comes with Mercedes me Charge, one of the largest charging networks worldwide with more than 700,000 AC and DC charging points, including 300,000 in Europe. The lithium-ion battery, with up to 12 cell modules, can be charged at a DC fast charging station in 15 minutes, with a range of up to 250 kilometers.
Tying all of this information together is the MBUX Hyperscreen, which provides a distortion-free view of the display unit across the entire width of the vehicle. The MBUX provides drivers with information on the state of charge of the battery and charging stations along the route, as well as personalized suggestions for information and entertainment, comfort and vehicle functions.
“Be it family, adventurers, tech fans or music lovers: When the EQS SUV is launched in the second half of 2022, it will fulfill the wishes of many customers. The target groups are diverse, but they are united by the active lifestyle. Furthermore, the EQS SUV simply looks good,” said Britta Seeger, member of the board of management for Mercedes-Benz Group AG, responsible for marketing and sales.
The space on the inside of the EQS SUV is generous, with more than average shoulder room and elbow. The second row of seats can be electrically adjusted up to 130 millimeters forward or backward, and the backrests recline electronically by 14 degrees to the front and 4 degrees to the rear.
Because the second row of seats can be adjusted, the luggage compartment can be expanded up to 2100 liters, depending on the number of passengers and seat configurations. If all seven seats are used, a volume of 195 liters remains behind the third row of seats.
