Hyundai’s Santa Cruz starting production in Montgomery

Hyundai released the first teaser sketch of the new Santa Cruz this week. The vehicle offers a crossover that is part SUV, part truck, providing drivers with a highly maneuverable all-wheel drive vehicle that is at home in both an urban and off-road environments.

“Open-bed flexibility coupled with closed-cabin security meets the changing everyday needs of its adventure-oriented buyers, while powerful and efficient engines and superb maneuverability ensure it is a pleasure to drive in urban or off-road environments,” said Jose Munoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America.

Built in Montgomery, the Santa Cruz goes into production this summer. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama currently is producing the Sonata and Elantra sedans and the Santa Fe and Tucson SUVs. Adding the Santa Cruz means the 3.4-million-square-foot production facility will produce five vehicles in 2021, along with the engines that power them. The plant typically can produce 390,000 vehicles in a year’s time, which are distributed in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. HMMA employs approximately 3,000 workers.
