Hyundai Launches 2022 Tucson SUV Production

2022 Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama launched production of the all-new 2022 Tucson SUV, marking the first time the Tucson has been assembled in the United States.

The Tucson joins the Sonata and Elantra sedans and the Santa Fe SUV on the Montgomery assembly line, making it the first time HMMA has produced four vehicles at once.

“Hyundai Motor Co. brought Tucson production to the U.S. because we have proven our ability to build world class automobiles,” said Ernie Kim, president and CEO of HMMA. “Today, the Hyundai brand has positive momentum in the marketplace, thanks to the expanding lineup of sport utility vehicles. The new Tucson will continue that momentum in 2021.”

HMMA recently underwent a plant expansion to support adding the Tucson to the plant’s production. The addition will also help sustain high-quality jobs at HMMA and throughout its supplier base.

Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling model globally and represents its vision for progressive design, eco-focused powertrains and segment-leading technologies. HMMA will supply internal combustion versions of the Tucson to the North American market, including Canada and Mexico.

The new Tucson embraces the integration of new technologies with a sportiness design and all-wheel drive capabilities. The SUV embodies what Hyundai designers call “parametric dynamics” with jewel-like surface detailing, evolving Hyundai’s “sensuous sportiness” design identity. The vehicle has a long hood and level roofline coupled with a long wheelbase and short overhangs, giving it a striking contrast between sleek silhouette and masculine wedge lines.

Inside, the dash blends seamlessly with the doors, accenting the openness. It comes with a 10.25-inch full-touch screen and a temperature-adjusting system providing diffused airflow on the front passengers. Its second-row seats feature fold-and-dive functionality for easy reconfiguration between passengers and cargo. Its longer wheelbase also provides more room for increased passenger and cargo space.

The vehicle comes with either a Smartstream 2.5-liter, direct-injected and multi-port-injected gasoline engine or a 1.6-liter, direct-injected, turbocharged hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Smartstream 2.5-liter engines boasts 187 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 178 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a targeted combined fuel economy of 28 mpg with front-wheel drive. It is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
