Hyundai 2022 Q1 retail sales increased 1.4%

Nearly half the Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2021 were built in Montgomery

The Montgomery-made Hyundai Santa Fe sold 25,582 units in the first quarter of 2022.

Hyundai Motor America reported retail sales of 159,676 units in the first quarter of 2022, a 1.4% increase over the same quarter a year ago. Electrified vehicle retail sales also increased by 241% in the first quarter.

“The first quarter was an all-time retail sales record for Hyundai as we focused on meeting the tremendous consumer demand despite ongoing inventory challenges,” said Randy Parker, senior vice president, national sales for Hyundai Motor America.

In March, Hyundai sold 59,380 units, its third-best March in the company’s history and a 13% increase in month over month numbers.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, in Montgomery, currently manufactures the Elantra sedan, the Santa Fe and Tucson SUVs and the Santa Cruz truck. Of these models, the Tucson sold the most at 39,655 units in the first quarter of 2022, which was slightly up from the first quarter of 2021 at 33,147 units. This was followed by the Santa Fe, which sold 25,582 units in the first quarter of 2022, and the Elantra, which sold 22,072 units during the first quarter of this year. The Santa Cruz sold 8,400 units during the first quarter of 2022. 

Some of the Montgomery models also received accolades recently. The Santa Fe was named a Best Family Car of 2022 by Kelley Blue Book and the Tucson was named Utility Vehicle of the Year for 2022 by AutoGuide. The Elantra N also took home an AutoGuide award for Performance Car of the Year for 2022.

Hyundai’s 820 dealers sold more than 738,000 vehicles in the U.S. in 2021, with nearly half of them built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery.
