Founded in 1904, Steward Machine, a multi-generation family-owned business based in Birmingham, offers custom manufacturing, fabrication, machining, painting, inspection and shipping. That’s a far cry from its humble beginnings as a manufacturer of supplies for the coal and iron ore mining industry in central Alabama. In this 1920 photo supplied by Steward, an unidentified worker is shown next to a coal mine hoist. Today, the company has more than 290,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and major projects include lift bridges and lock and dam facilities.
