The SMART Transportation Division union, one of the largest railroad unions, rejected a contract deal, bringing a country-wide rail strike closer. The national rail strike could happen as early as Dec. 5, affecting everything from coal shipments to drinking water.  – The Washington Post

 

Florida company buys Mobile apartments

Carter Multifamily, based in Tampa, Florida, has acquired the Astoria Apartments on Grelot Road in Mobile. The community includes 252 units and almost 300,000 square feet.  – Carter Multifamily

Amtrak service returns to Mobile

Amtrak passenger rail and freight service will return to Mobile after a protracted battle between Amtrak and freight railroads, according to the Southern Rail Commission. No word, yet, on when that service will continue. — WVTM 13

 

UAH establishes Shelby chair

The University of Alabama in Huntsville has established the Senator Richard Shelby Endowed Chair in Engineering. The chair was established, in part, because Shelby “has been a staunch advocate for research and education and made an indelible impact on higher education in Alabama,” University of Alabama System Chancellor Finis St. John said.  – University of Alabama in Huntsville

 

Mobile housing nonprofit among Bezos grant winners

Housing First Inc., based in Mobile, is among 40 recipients of Bezos Day One Fund grants, given by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ foundation. The Mobile group received a grant of $5 million. The foundation gave a total of $123.45 million to homeless groups in 26 states. – Bezos Day One Fund
