Calhoun Community College has named Derrick Powell Jr. as its new head coach for men’s basketball.
Powell most recently coached at Tuskegee University, where he was an assistant and recruiting coordinator for three years. Prior to that, he served as head coach at the Montgomery Knights MLB in 2020, Wetumpka High School Class 6A from 2017 to 2019 and the Calhoun School Class 2A from 2016 to 2017. He has more than 15 years of experience and has received several awards as an educator.
The Lowndes County native is also a U.S. Navy veteran. A graduate of Jefferson Davis High School, he was known as a player with defensive doggedness and rebounding skills. He has a bachelor’s in physical education from Faulkner University and a master’s in teaching with a emphasis in leadership from Grand Canyon University.
