Brasfield & Gorrie last week joined Atlanta officials to celebrate a benchmark in the general contractor’s work on the Georgia Aquarium Expansion 2020. The topping-out ceremony celebrated completion of the building’s framework — 1,100 tons of reinforcing steel.
The star of the new expansion is a 1-million-gallon shark exhibit that will feature all-encompassing acrylic viewing areas.
Birmingham-based Brasfield & Gorrie was the contractor for the original Georgia Aquarium, which opened in 2005, and the builder also completed an earlier expansion, showcasing a dolphin exhibit, in 2011.
“We’re honored to continue our longstanding partnership with the Georgia Aquarium and support its mission to entertain, educate and promote conservation,” said Vice President and Division Manager Chris Britton.
Brasfield & Gorrie is collaborating with Peckham, Guyton, Albers & Viets Architects on the aquarium project, which is slated for completion in fall 2020.
