Bromberg Jewelers, a legacy Birmingham retailer, is renovating its Mountain Brook location, nearly doubling the square footage of retail space. The store has been in Mountain Brook Village since 1959.
Bromberg’s, a family-owned and operated company, opened its first store in 1836 and is the oldest family-owned retailer in the United States, according to the company. It is Birmingham’s only American Gem Society member and is a retailer of diamonds, custom jewelry, luxury timepieces and giftware.
“As a legacy brand, we owe it to our customers to stay fresh and continually enhance the shopping experience,” said Frederick W. “Ricky” Bromberg, president of Bromberg & Co. “Innovation has been important to our success; the changes you will see in the Mountain Brook store are dramatic with an elevated feel, reflecting the leading edge of luxury retail.”

While the building’s mid-century modern design will be preserved, the store is annexing a portion of the adjacent building, adding an entrance and square footage. Exterior renovations include new stone cladding and a bronze trim. The interior will be open and airy, with a palette and details inspired by precious metals and gemstones.
The additional space will become Bromberg Galleries, housing the bridal registry, giftware, fine china and home décor.
“Transformative is the best word to describe this project,” said Hank Long, principal of Henry Sprott Long and Associates, the architecture firm on the project. The firm was the one who designed the original building and is spearheading the redesign. The project’s lead architect is Alex Wilson.
Interior design consultant Stephanie Maxey has worked in collaboration with Henry Sprott Long and Associates to encompass spatial planning, case design and the selection of finishes.
“This is an exciting project steeped in history, and it demands thoughtful, lasting work,” said Wilson. “It is our duty to create something timeless in design, resilient in structure and forward-thinking in function; the store is poised to be a source of satisfaction and pride for all involved for years to come.”
Construction begins in August with a build-out in phases, allowing the store to remain open during the transformation.
