Ascension St. Vincent’s is moving forward with its plans for a freestanding emergency department in Pelham.
After receiving the certificate of need, site work is set to begin at exit 242 on Interstate 65, with plans to open the facility tentatively set for summer 2025.
“This facility will meet a significant need for people who live in and around Pelham,” said Jason Alexander, CEO of Ascension St. Vincent’s. “Our goal is to make sure residents have access to emergency medical care when they need it.”
In addition to emergency service, the new two-story facility will offer diagnostics, primary and specialty care services.
Ascension St. Vincent’s applied to the state’s Certificate of Need Review Board for approval in May 2022. The application included letters of support for the facility from local leaders and elected officials.
“I know from experience that a freestanding emergency department like this can make a difference when minutes matter and lives are at stake,” said Pelham Mayor Gary Waters, who is a retired fire chief and was among one of the 40 local officials and leaders who supported the project.
