American Family Care, a Birmingham-based operator of urgent care centers, has acquired Doctors Express, the largest franchisor of such centers in the country. With the acquisition and other new centers already in progress, American Family Care will operate 140 centers in 26 states — making it the second largest privately held urgent care operator in the country.
AFC centers will retain their current name, and the newly acquired centers will go by the designation AFC/Doctors Express.
CEO D. Bruce Irwin, the physician owner and founder of AFC, says changes in national health law should be a benefit to his company and other similar ones.
“We are primary care providers, and the demand for our services will continue to grow with these changes, ” says Irwin.
Headquarters for the company will remain in Birmingham.
