Daniel McCarthy

Daniel McCarthy named director of athletics at the University of South Alabama

The University of South Alabama has appointed Daniel McCarthy as director of athletics. McCarthy has been serving as interim director since the retirement of Joel Erdmann.

McCarthy has served as deputy athletics director since 2017. He joined South Alabama Athletics in 2008. As deputy athletics director, he oversaw South’s external operations while providing oversight for the sports of football, baseball and softball, among others. He also served as primary liaison between athletics and other units on campus.

“When we looked at the future of Jaguar Athletics, it became abundantly clear that the best person to lead us forward was already a member of the University of South Alabama family,” said USA President Jo Bonner. “The feedback we received from stakeholders confirmed that Dr. McCarthy’s dedication to our university and his exceptional impact at South make him uniquely qualified for this role.”

He is a graduate of Huntingdon College, earned his master’s from University of Georgia and his doctorate in education leadership from the University of South Alabama. He also is a graduate of the university’s Leadership South and Leadership Fellows programs.
