Turner Construction Company, a general contractor with offices in Alabama since the 1950s, is hosting an 8-week workshop for small businesses in the construction industry. The program is designed to provide North Alabama businesses with the tools they need to grow and find opportunities to work on major projects in the area.
The Turner School of Construction Management (TSCM) is free to qualified businesses, but space is limited. To be eligible, businesses must be a construction-oriented firm in business for at least three years.
Registration is open now and runs until April 30. The program begins May 7th with classes on Thursdays until June 25th. Classes run from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Turner’s offices located at 245 Finney Drive Southwest in Huntsville. Lunch is provided for all program attendees during each class.
“The Turner School of Construction Management is designed to create meaningful opportunities for local small businesses,” said Rebecca Goodwin, senior community and citizenship specialist for Turner. “By providing access to resources, relationships and real project experience, we’re helping firms strengthen their capabilities in today’s marketplace. We want to foster long-term growth by connecting local businesses to the work shaping their community.”
One of the longest-operating education and community outreach programs in the commercial construction industry, Turner’s program presents an opportunity for firms to improve their economic viability by enhancing their managerial, technical and administrative skills while networking with similar businesses. Companies also learn how to make themselves more visible to large general contractors. Turner’s team in Alabama will offer the program in Birmingham later in the year.
Turner serves clients in the aerospace, industrial, government, education and commercial segments. The company is currently working on major projects in Birmingham and Huntsville with other work in locations from Tennessee to South Carolina. Turner aims to secure at least 20% of sub-contract work through small and local businesses but exceeds 30% on many projects.
