SSAB broke ground Thursday on its new Temperloop facility in Axis, in Mobile County.

The $74 million project, announced in 2025, includes a new building with a tempering furnace, as well as infrastructure improvements. It is expected to be completed in 2027.

“The new facility will substantially enhance SSAB’s ability to serve its customers in the U.S. market with premium steel products,” the company said when the project was announced.

Based in Sweden, SSAB operates steel production facilities in Sweden, Finland and the U.S.

“This [Alabama] investment will not only expand our capacity for niche products, which are in high demand, but also enable us to offer a broader product range from our Alabama facility,” Kjell Baeckman, head of sales special steels for SSAB, said last year. “This will enhance our offerings to customers primarily in North and South America.”
