Economic Development

Retired AT&T Alabama President Fred McCallum will serve as interim president and CEO of the Birmingham Business Alliance, during the search for a permanent president and CEO. In addition, BBA Manager of Public Policy Elizabeth Paul has been selected to participate in the Business Leads Fellowship Program put on by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama has named Barkley Garrett vice president for economic development. He replaces Al Spencer, who retired earlier this year.

Education

Auburn University has named James Weyhenmeyer vice president for research. In addition, S.F. “Sarge” Bilgili will come out of retirement to serve as interim head of AU’s Department of Poultry Science, replacing Don Conner who retired in April. The College of Agriculture is conducting a national search to permanently fill the department head position.

Patricia Wilson, vice president for student services at Calhoun Community College, is one of 25 college administrators to win a distinguished college administrator award from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

As part of a national collaboration between the National Society of Black Engineers and The Links Inc., Debra Nelson has been selected to participate in the National STEM Education Program. Nelson is founder of Elevate Communications LLC of Birmingham.

Troy University Administrator Lance Tatum has been appointed senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. Tatum follows Earl Ingram, who retired at the beginning of 2019 after 31 years of service.

Tuskegee University President Lily McNair has been selected to receive the Stony Brook University Distinguished Alumni Award.

University of Mobile professor of nursing Sarah Barnes-Witherspoon has been named interim dean for the School of Nursing in the College of Health Professions.

Tina Jones has been named vice president of the University of West Alabama’s new Division of Economic and Workforce Development.

Ross Dickens has been hired as dean of the College of Business at Auburn University at Montgomery.

Lili Anderson will serve as the inaugural executive director of the Visual and Performing Arts for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Clayton Simien, an assistant professor in the Department of Physics, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Career Grant for research on atomic clocks and low-temperature plasmas. Also, Andrew Butler has been named the dean of the UAB School of Health Professions.

Health Care

Jade Brice Roshell, director of Shelby Baptist Medical Center’s Hospitalist Program, has been named chief medical officer. In addition, she recently was named to Becker’s 2019 list of African American Leaders in Healthcare, one of only 68 honorees nationwide.

Southeast Health, in Dothan, has hired Kelly Hurt as vice president, chief human resources officer. She has more than 10 years of experience in the field.

Dr. Paul Canale, an orthopaedic surgeon with The Spine Institute at Baldwin Bone & Joint, has received the Compassionate Doctor Recognition and a Patients’ Choice Award for 2018 from Vitals.

Legal

Armbrecht Jackson LLP has named Duane Graham managing partner. Graham previously served as co-managing partner.

Adams and Reese has appointed Russell Rutherford partner in charge of the firm’s Birmingham office.

Joey Chbeir has joined Baker Donelson in its Birmingham office.

Christopher Maddux has been elected to succeed Donald Clark Jr. as chair of Butler Snow. Clark has served as chair since 2006 and will finish out 2019.

Carl “Trey” Dowdey III, of Swift, Currie, McGhee & Hiers LLP, has been selected to take over command of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 10th Legal Operations Detachment. He is one of just 23 Legal Operations Detachment commanders nationwide.

Carolyne Jones Hess has joined Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP as an associate in the Real Estate Practice Group and Paul Sykes has returned to the firm as a partner. Partner David Holt has been named a Departmental Fellow of the University of Alabama Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Partner Axel Bolvig III has been selected a Fellow of the Construction Lawyers Society of America. Also, Partner Aman Kahlon has received the American Bar Association Military Pro Bono Project Outstanding Services Award for his work in 2018. Partner Kim Bessiere Martin has been named Litigation Practice Group Leader.

AAA Cooper Transportation has promoted Michelle Lewis to chief financial officer. Lewis replaces Steve Roy, who will remain on the board of the company. 

Standridge Logistics and Consulting LLC, of Birmingham, has added Andy Jocham as director of business development. Prior to joining Standridge, Jocham served as director for industrial recruitment and retention at the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority.

Manufacturing

Cerrowire, located in Hartselle, has hired Ugo Njoku as purchasing manager. In this role he will manage supplier relationships for plants in Alabama, Georgia and Utah.

The Business Council of Alabama has named David Cole senior vice president of governmental affairs and Molly Cagle vice president of governmental affairs.

Monde Donaldson has joined the Better Business Bureau Serving Central & South Alabama as vice president for education and development at the Mobile location.

Caleb Crosby, Alabama Policy Institute president, has received a distinguished alumni award from the University of South Alabama.

The Catalyst Center for Business & Entrepreneurship presented its 2019 Entrepreneur Awards to Joshua Wortham, Morgan Goss, Rachel Lackey, Edwina Musante, La’Berrick Williams, Mel Bowers, Lee Marshall and Joe Newberry

Rachell Holifield has joined Alabama Farmers Federation as manager of accounting process. Also, Brady Ragland has joined as division director of the Beef, Equine, Hay & Forage and Meat Goat & Sheep divisions.

Alicia Vincent, executive director of the Greater Birmingham Association of Homebuilders, was named the National Association of Home Builders Professional Women in Building Council’s Executive Officer of the Year.

The Alabama Republican Party has named Jeannie Faherty as its communications director.

William J. Stevens has been elected to the board of director of Russell Lands Inc. Now retired, Stevens served 37 years with Motion Industries Inc.

Associate Brokers Eric Leisy and Calvin Perryman, of Great Southern Land LLC, have been recognized as part of the 2018 APEX Producers Club by the Realtors Land Institute. Members have at least $4 million of qualifying dollar volume in closed land sales in 2018.

One Club Gulf Shores has appointed April Reynolds as bar manager of 45, its restaurant and entertainment venue.

Senior Living

Atlas Senior Living has promoted Abbey Reach to director of compliance. Reach has an administrator’s license, as well as the certified risk and compliance management professional certification.

Wealth Management

Michael Mullis, managing partner and wealth manager for Kelley & Mullis, has been recognized as one of Barron’s 2019 America’s Top 1,200 Financial Advisors. He ranked among the top 10 for the state of Alabama.

Merrill Lynch announced that Fairhope Wealth Management Advisor S. Wesley Carpenter has been recognized on the 2019 Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisors list.
